If
you believe you may be pregnant - either because your period is late or you have
had elevated basal body temperatures for at least 18 days post ovulation - it's
time to take the test. You can have a pregnancy test done at your doctor's office,
but you may find it more convenient to use an at-home pregnancy test, available
at grocery, discount and drug stores. At-home pregnancy tests give you the privacy
and convenience of testing at home without having to schedule, wait for and pay
for a doctor's appointment. If you think you may be pregnant, chances are that
you want to know now, not in a few days when you can get in to see your doctor.
Pregnancy
tests, whether done at home or in the physician's office,
detect the presence of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin
(hCG) in the urine. hCG can be detected in the urine by approximately
11 days post-ovulation. Most pregnancy tests can be used as
early as the first day of a missed period, and some, even
sooner.
